Niger State and 3 Other States Seek N408b Over Relocation of Capital To Abuja
About N408 billion is requested by four states sharing boundary with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a Special Intervention Fund from federal government to cushion the effect of conceding part of their lands for the FCT.
This indication was given by the Niger State commissioner for lands and housing, Dr Peter Saleh Sarki, while speaking to journalists at Government House, Minna.
The four states the commissioner listed were Niger, Kaduna, Kogi and Nasarawa saying that the Special Intervention Fund, from the federal government was to tackle the problems caused the state as a result of the relocation of the federal capital from Lagos to Abuja.
He stated that the FCT has also made a request for the release of funds to tackle the influx of people from all over the country to Abuja.
The commissioner disclosed that because the bulk of the land now forming the present federal capital was from Niger State and the state gave the name Abuja, the state is requesting for N28 billion as an intervention fund.
According to him, Niger State made the first move for the intervention fund before the other states sharing boundary with the FCT joined, disclosing that the initial request was N1.4 trillion before it was reduced to N408 billion.
Peter Sarki hinted that if the request is granted by the federal government it would be used to upgrade infrastructures overstretched by the nearness of the states to the FCT.
