Indian Couple Convicted of Murdering Their Daughter And Servant
In one of India’s most highly awaited verdicts, the parents of Aarushi Talwar, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, have been found guilty of murdering her and their domestic helper.
Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, dentists in their late 40s from Noida a satellite town around 20 kms from New Delhi will be sentenced on Tuesday afternoon.
Aarushi's body was found in her own bedroom, just next door to her parents' room at their home in the affluent Delhi suburb of Noida,
Prosecutors alleged that the Talwars killed their daughter in a rage when they found her in a compromising situation with Hemraj their helper.
In the early days of the police investigation, Aarushi was described as a girl of "loose moral character" who chatted with boys and went for "sleepovers" at friends' homes.
The double homicide has been notorious in India since 2008 and was widely seen as an honour killing by the parents infuriated at an alleged liaison between their daughter and Hemraj, the domestic helper.
“Parents are the best protectors of their own children. That is the order of human nature, but there have been freaks in the history of mankind where the father and mother became the killer of their own progeny,” the court in its 204-page judgment said.
The parents issued a statement expressing their anguish at the verdict. Sentencing is to take place on Tuesday and the couple could face a life sentence or even the death penalty. Their lawyers say they will appeal.
"We are deeply disappointed, hurt and anguished for being convicted for a crime that we have not committed. We refuse to feel defeated and will continue to fight for justice," the Talwars said in a written statement given to reporters.
The Talwars will challenge the verdict in a higher court.
