Season of Defections: 11 PDP Senators Defect to APC

More blow to Nigeria's ruling People Democratic Party (PDP) as 11 senators quit to join  major opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the latest series of defections.

Analysts say many PDP members are upset over President Johnathan perceived desire to contest for a second term come February 2015 elections.

The PDP which has won every national election since the end of military rule in 1999 lost 37 members of its house of representatives to the opposition party, wiping out the ruling party's majority in the lower house.Several state governors have also defected to the APC.

Though PDP still has a Senate majority, it needs opposition help to pass bills and it is believed that many more may be waiting to do so.

The senators and the representatives joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), which now has 33 senators in the 109-member chamber.

The APC has called on its members to block all legislation, including the 2014 budget. The party said it wanted the "rule of law" restored in oil-rich Rivers state and "Nigeria in general".
