The Niger Times Remembers Late General Salihu Musa Lemu

The loss of 15 senior army officers and three crew members when an 18-seater Dornier 228 Air Force transport plane crashed, 7 years ago on the 17th of September 2006 was a loss not only to their immediate family but a loss to the nation.


The Niger Times remembers Major General Salihu Musa Lemu on his birthday today January 1st, who died along with 7 other Generals in the ill fated military aircraft which crashed at Oko village in Vandeikya local government area of Benue State leaving only five survivors that sustained serious injuries.

The great man, General S.M Lemu was born on 1st January 1952 in Lemu town, Gbako Local Government area of Niger state.

He enrolled into the Nigerian Army on the 2nd of July 1973 becoming a member of regular of course 14 and was commissioned on 13th of December into the Nigerian Army Military Police corps as a regular combatant second lieutenant.

General Lemu passed through several ranks in Nigerian Army, and rose to the rank of Major General; the last rank he hung on his shoulder before he died in the plane crash at the Ngokugh Hills of Benue State.

General S.M Lemu before his demise served in numerous commands and held several staff appointments.

These includes; platoon commander 68 infantry Battalion, platoon commander 181 mechanized infantry Battalion, commandant Nigerian Army school of Military Police Zaria, the Provost Marshal Nigerian Army corps of military police, and Chief of Administration Nigerian Army.

It is also pertinent to note that General Lemu participated in peace keeping operations in Liberia where he worked professionally to restore peace in the war-torn country. He also took part in United Nation peace keeping operations in Congo and Angola.

He however obtained some laudable qualifications which lay the basis for his professionalism in the Nigerian Army; General Lemu was a holder of Diploma in Correctional Administration, Diploma in Law enforcement, Diploma in command leadership.

Furthermore, his immerse contribution to the Nigerian Army as a professional officer earned him the following military medals, namely ECOMOG silver jubilee medal, United Nation medal, Corps medal of honors, silver jubilee medal among others.

Complimentary to these medals are the following awards. The awards are Pass Junior Course, Force Service Star (FSS) fellow of the war college, Pass Staff Course with Dagger (PSC), Meritorious Service Staff (MSS) and Distinguished Service Staff (DSS).

General Lemu was a very honest and humble person who detested any move to impress people. A complete gentle man, he was ever constant, consistent and determined to assist in which ever way within his ability.

He died as a well respected professional officer in the course of service to the nation. He survived by his wife and seven children(5 Boys, 2 Girls).

He was a gallant officer and a great loss to Niger State and Nigeria.
