Goodluck Jonathan Commissions Nigerian-Turkish Hospital in Abuja

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday commissioned a multimillion dollar Nigeria-Turkish hospital in the capital Abuja, an investment he sees as a boost to longstanding relations between the two countries.

"Today's commissioning of the Nigeria-Turkish Nizamiye hospital in Abuja (Nigeria's capital) represents another important landmark in the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and Turkey," Jonathan said.

"I'm glad to note that our relationship is steadily growing into several facets of our national economy, including the education and health sectors."

The Nigerian president said the hospital, equipped to attend to myriad health challenges, will help cut medical migration of many wealthy Nigerians.

"I would like to congratulate the management board of the Nigeria-Turkish Nizamiye hospital which represents a significant investment in our health sector," he said.

"No doubt, the state-of-the-art medieval diagnostic equipment available at the hospital will meet the needs of those who may have had to travel outside the country for such care."

Turkish ambassador Mustafa Pulat, for his part, lauded the health initiative, which he said would strengthen Turkish-Nigerian relations.

Thursday's ceremony was attended by senior Nigerian officials and top Turkish personalities as well as the hospital director Mustafa Ahsen.

Both Pulat and Ahsen said the 80-bed hospital is affordable to Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike, and hailed the country's hospitality towards non-Nigerians.

The medical facility covers wide ranging areas such as radiology, urology, pediatrics, cardiology, pharmacy and neurosurgery, Ahsen said.
