Nupe Foundation Threatens To Pull Out Natives From National Conference

The Nupe Foundation (Ninibo Nupe) has threatened to pull out all Nupe delegates at the ongoing national conference in protest over its exclusion from the confab.

This was disclosed by the foundation’s national president, Engr. Y. Y. Sani, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja.

The foundation, a socio-cultural organisation of Nupe people in Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and those  in Diaspora, has invited all members of its national executive council (NEC) to an emergency meeting slated for Saturday, March 29, 2014, at its headquarters in Bida, to ratify the decision of its national working committee (NWC) “to order the immediate withdrawal of all Nupe people from the ongoing national conference”.

The NWC described as outlandish and abuse of history that “at a time when a national conference whose highest number of delegates, 90 (about 20%), was drawn from the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, not one from Nupe is deemed fit to be among the 90 ethnic nationalities out of the total number of delegates (492) from all the various categories that constitute the membership of the confab,” he said.

The foundation said it made several representations to the relevant government authorities, calling their attention to the urgent need to correct what it called the “unacceptable mistake” but to no avail.

It, however, commend the wisdom of President Goodluck Jonathan for convening the conference.

Ironically, the chairman of the conference, Justice Idris Kutigi, is a notable Nupe son while Prof Jerry Gana and former Niger State governor Abdulkadir Kure, both Nupes, were nominated by the government.
