"If you hit a man that man has the right to hit you back" - Whoopi Goldberg Defends Statement on Solange's Elevator Attack
US comedian Whoopi Goldberg has defended controversial comments she made saying men should have the right to hit women back, while discussing Beyonce's sister Solange's attack on Jay Z.
The star spoke out on The View earlier this week while discussing the elevator fight.
"I think Solange was quite ready for him to do whatever he was going to do. This is the thing - if anybody hits you, you have the right," Goldberg said.
"I know that many people are raised in a different way - but if a woman hits you, to me, you have the right to hit her back."
After receiving backlash from fans over her views, she took to Facebook to clear them up and posted a video with the caption: "The press is now making a big deal about my statement on The View about a woman slapping a man. Here is what I have to say." Watch video below:
In it, she said: "Hey, I know everyone is freaking out like I said that they would when I said if someone hits you, you have the right to hit them back. I didn't say Jay Z should have hit Solange.
"I said if you hit a man that man has the right to hit you back. That's what I said."
She added: "I stand by that. If you hit anybody, they have the right to hit you back. This idea that men aren't supposed to hit women - if you slap a man he has the right to slap you back.
"Now, not everyone is going to agree and I'm okay with that. But that's how I feel. That's why I don't slap anybody."
Beyonce, her husband AND her sister released a joint statement on Thursday to say they were keen to move forward as a family and both Jay and Solange had apologised for the inicident.

That's how I was raised. If you put yourself in a man's position and hit him.... He has every right to hit you back.

ReplyDeleteIf Jay-Z had launched into Solange that way, everyone would be calling him an abuser or a bully. I haven't heard ANYONE call Solange anything. There is indeed a double standard.
ReplyDeleteIts not fair for women to hit men just because they think they won't hit them back. There is a surprising amount of woman on man domestic violence. We should encourage everyone to keep their hands to themselves.
