APC Leading the Race For Niger East Senatorial District

Results collated during the Niger East Senatorial by-election to fill the vacant seat of Late Senator Dahiru Awaisu who died on June 12, has shown that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken an early lead.


According to reports, the by-election was peaceful and well conducted as materials for voting got to their appropriate voting centers on schedule as planned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Results of the election just trickling in as they were announced in different polling units of Niger indicated that in Dama unit, the APC a total of 112 votes against the PDP’s 17 votes.

APC also won in Gada polling unit with 135 votes against the PDP which scored 31 votes. At Gidan Kwano, APC scored 104 votes while PDP had 33. Same story occurred at Gidan Mangoro, where APC scored 96 votes against PDP which recorded 56 votes.

In Epigi, APC recorded 230, while PDP had 34. Also in Sabon Lunko, the opposition party scored 174, leaving the PDP with 29 votes. At Garatu, APC polled a total of 133 leaving the PDP with 74.

APC also won in Kotagi with 102 votes, the PDP scored just 40 votes

Meanwhile, the story was different in Sabon Gada, where PDP recorded a victory, polling total votes of 105, while APC trailed very closely with 95 votes.

While PDP won in Kpaida with 135 votes, the PDP scored 28 votes. In Tsohon polling unit, the PDP again slammed the APC scoring 360 votes as against the 230 scored by APC.

At Tudun Wada north, the APC polled a total 1222 votes, while the PDP recorded 490. Also at Gwada polling unit, the APC recorded 730 votes against the PDP which polled 80. In Kuta APC scored 925 votes while PDP polled 223.

The final results are expected to be announced sometime soon.

According to DailtTimes, Niger state Governor Babangida Aliyu has commended the maturity displayed by voters in Saturday’s Niger East senatorial bye- election just as he also praised the peaceful nature of the polls held in 9 local government areas of the state.

He said at the Umar Musa polling unit that voters also displayed determination to exercise their franchise by coming out in their thousands to cast their ballots.

The Governor said with what he saw on Saturday democracy has come to stay in the country.
