First Suspected Ebola Case Recorded in Kaduna State

A 19- year old student of Law at the Ahmadu Bello University has been diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus in Kaduna.


The Public Relations Officer, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Bilyaminu Umar, while confirming the case to Premium Times on Monday said the student was diagnosed at ABUTH, Shika, Zaria.

Umar who said he will provide more details soon, added that the suspected Ebola patient will be placed on isolation.

UPDATE 3 Sept 2014: The 19-year old law student of the Ahmadu Bello University [ABU] initially reported to have the Ebola Virus Disease [EVD] has tested negative to the virus.

Authorities of ABU and the Kaduna State Government had sent the patient’s blood to Lagos for testing after he reportedly manifested some symptoms associated with Ebola while on admission at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital [ABUTH]. Read more here

Meanwhile Hundreds of community members at the Down Quarters area of Kaduna South Local Government of Kaduna State staged a peaceful protest last week on Wednesday over the proposed location of an Ebola quarantine center within the community.

The protesters stated that they would utilise all available means to reject the location of the centre in their area and accused the government of not been fair to them.

The chairman of the Down Quarters Community Association, Mr James Ojo said it became imperative for them to stage the protest because Ebola virus had become a human pandemic, which must not be handled with kids’ glove. Read more on Nigerian Tribune.
