60% of The 39 Federal Roads in Niger State in Deplorable Condition
Over 60 per cent of the 39 Federal Roads in Niger State have been identified to be in totally bad condition according recent inventory taken by the state government with a view to making a case to the Federal Government.
Speaking at the weekly post-Exco Media briefing held at Government House, Minna, the State Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure, Alhaji Mu’azu Bawa Rijau disclosed that the state had the highest number of such roads in the country spanning about 2,375 Km stressing that their conditions were deplorable.
According to the Commissioner, the inventory taken on the condition of the roads indicates that 13 were bad, 15 fair, 10 are good while work had stopped on two. He said 12 roads required rehabilitation, nine required maintenance while about 8 needed complete reconstruction.
The Commissioner stated the inventory had been properly articulated for onward presentation to the Federal Government for necessary action.
Alhaji Mu’azu Bawa Rijau disclosed that his ministry had saved over N68Million from the N9Billion bond projects been executed by the government across the state adding, however, that the amount had been utilized to pay the management consultants or external engineers who supervised the projects.
He confirmed that all the projects under the N9Billion bond had been completed except the Shiroro Bridge whose contract, he said, had been terminated adding that a new contractor would soon be deployed to handle the N1.5Billion project while effort was being made by government to recover the N364Million paid to the former contractor as mobilization fee.
