Campaigners against Polio Immunisation in Niger State Risk Jail Time

NIGER State Government is taking tougher measures against those evading polio immunisation or trying to stop children from being immunised against child killer diseases in the state.

To this end, the state government has amended the Niger State Health Care Development Agency law to provide for 10 years jail term or N100, 000 fine for any cleric or persons found guilty of preaching against the immunisation of children.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Abdullahi Bawa Wuse, who disclosed this at a post executive council media briefing in Minna yesterday, also said that the amended law has provided for six months imprisonment or N50, 000 option of fine for anyone who refused to be immunised or disallowed his ward from being vaccinated.

In addition, Wuse said that checkpoints are to be set up in strategic locations in the 25 local council areas of the state where children being brought into the state are to be immunised notwithstanding whether or not they have been vaccinated from their former residence.
