Federal Government yet to Respond to Niger States Crude Oil Discovery

Niger State Government says the Federal Government is yet to respond to the information about the discovery of crude oil in the Bida Basin.

Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu disclosed this when he received the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Dr. Shettima Aji Ali at his residence in Minna.

He said he had written three letters to the Federal Government on the discovery of oil and was yet to receive any reply or encouragement from either the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) or the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

The Governor stated that his administration would start doing something as it await the Federal Government to respond adding that he was suppose to inaugurate an interior basin association with Niger, Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi and Benue States to push the issue forward and get the private sector to come and confirm the discovery and commence exploration.

Governor Aliyu said it was disheartening and hoped that the Federal Government was not playing with the issue as it had earmarked $100Million in this year’s budget for the exploration of oil in the country.

He said the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, which was an economic unifying factor in the north, should try to sensitize and relate with relevant agencies and groups to harness the economy of the region. Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu noted that if there was oil in Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroun, it only showed that oil could be discovered in Borno, Sokoto and Yobe states.

He also advised the foundation to pay more attention to agriculture and revealed that his administration secured N1Billion agricultural loan and disbursed N600Million to farmers while the balance of N400Million was used on the procurement of Tractors.

The Governor commended the foundation for the success recorded so far and hoped it would continue with the activities geared towards economic rejuvenation of the north.

Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Dr. Shettima Aji Ali said the foundation undertook programmes which included free medical services, entrepreneurship training, scholarship scheme and solidarity visits to Borno, Yobe and Bauchi State where there were cases of insurgency.

He commended Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu for his support to the foundation.
