Nigerian Weightlifters Arrive Kuala Lumpur for 2013 Commonwealth Championship
Nigeria's contingent have touched down in Malaysia for the 2013 Commonwealth weightlifting championship,in a bid to use the tourney and prepare for the Glasgow 2014 Games.
The 22-man team came into Kuala Lumpur over the weekend and proceeded straight to the city that the competition will be held.
Weightlifting is a medal-hopeful sport for the Nigeria,with its athletes having excelled in past international competitions.
“We arrived Kuala Lumpur in the morning and flew thereafter to the coastal city of Penang where the championship is holding. We have settled down and quite ready for the competition which begins on Monday (today)” A board member of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) Lawrence Iquaibom said.
He further stated that the athletes are well poised for the competition,adding that they are happy with the support they got from the National Sports Commission(NSC) and the NWF.
“The lifters are in high spirits and ready for the competition. The lifters are happy with the level of support they are enjoying from the president of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) Hon. Chibudom Nwuche and from the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
"The sports minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and the Director General of NSC were part of our open trial in Abuja and they ensured the lifters were comfortable in camp before our coming here for the Commonwealth championship. We hope to do well here and reciprocate their kind gesture,” Iquaibom stated.
