Niger State Assembly Investigates Alleged Military Invasion of Lapai

Niger State House of Assembly on Thursday set up a five-man committee to investigate an alleged military invasion and obstruction of work in the legislative house of Lapai Local Government since Monday.

Hon. Usman Magaji representing Lapai constituency has in a motion of matter of urgent public importance said the legislative house of the council had been sealed by the occupation of armed military men allegedly on the orders of the chairman of the council, Hon. Isah Seidu Baka.

Trouble started in the council on the 3rd of January when seven of the 10 Councillors of the council removed the Hon. Usman Moh'd Ibrahim as the leader of the legislative house and Hon. Yusuf Ibrahim elected in his place for incompetence.

This development did not go down well with the council chairman who rejected the new leader, while efforts to resolve the matter by stakeholders in the council failed as the councillors stood their ground.

Magaji further alleged that the situation in the council worsen when on Monday the council chairman and the Commissioner for Livestock, Dr. Yahaya Vatsa influenced the state working committee of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend six of the councillors and directed the Commissioner for Local Government not to pay their salary and allowances for three months.

The crisis however hit the crescendo same day when armed military men allegedly invaded the legislative house and sealed it up on the orders of the chairman. The soldiers were alleged to have ordered the councillors to stay away the house or be shoot.

Magaji who had earlier presented a formal petition by the affected councillors and a video tape of the military occupation and harassment of the law makers  before the house said he was compelled to table the matter in order to prevent anarchy from taking over the council.

"The military invasion of the constituted arm of government portend danger for democracy and if the chairman who should be the sysmbol of democracy is the one inviting military, we have to act before things get out of hand," Magaji stated.

Irked by the military invasion as shown from the video clips and the petition, members of the state house of assembly frowned at political development in the council especially the militarization of the council by the chairman.

The house then resolved to set up an adhoc committee to investigate all the allegations and report back to the house by Tuesday January 21.
