Sheikh Ahmed Lemu Wins Saudi's Prestigious King Faisal International Prize
Sheikh Ahmed Abou Bakr Lemu of Niger state, Nigeria emerged one of the five distinguished scholars from various parts of the world, who won the prestigious King Faisal International Prize.
The annual King Faisal International Prize is the Arab most respected award, often referred to as the "Arab Nobel Prize" as many of its recipients had gone on to receive the Nobel Prize in their respective fields.
The prize was awarded in recognition of his efforts towards education, development and call to Islam.
Sheikh Lemu, who is also the Chairman, Council of Trustees, Islamic Relief Commission Office, was also honoured for his defence of Muslim women’s rights and his initiatives to combat extremism in Nigeria.
The prize rewards individuals and institutions whose accomplishments are not only exceptional in their own right, but make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge belonging to humankind.
He was appointed Grand Qadi of Niger State after the creation of the state in 1976. According to Arab News, the King Faisal International Prize for Science (Mathematics) was awarded to Prof. Gerd Faltings of Germany,the Prize for Medicine went to Prof. Yuk Ming Dennis Lo of China, the Prize for Arabic Language and Literature was awarded to Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim Allawi Albussabah of Iraq. The King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies went to Prof. Abdulwahab Ibrahim Abou Sulaiman, a member of the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars in the Kingdom.
