A recent study conducted on how Africans tweets has identified some interesting things regarding the African continent's tweeting patterns.


Conducted by communications agency Portland, the study was created to pin-point just how active Africans are on Twitter, and what it is they like to talk about.

Most Active Twitter City?
Johannesburg leads with 344 215 geo-located tweets followed by Ekurhuleni, Cairo, Durban and Egypt's Alexandria.

The Most Active Countries?
South Africa and Egypt are the two most active countries on Twitter.

Most Active Day?
The day former SA President Nelson Mandela died (5 December 2013) is when there was the highest volume of geo-located tweets in Africa.

Most Common Languages?
English, French and Arabic are the most common languages on Twitter in Africa followed by Zulu, Swahili, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Portuguese.

Most Active Tweeting Days? Tuesdays & Fridays
Tuesdays and Fridays are the two most active tweeting days and volumes peak at approximately 9pm.

The Most Discussed Topic In Africa?
The most discussed topic in Africa is soccer.

Most Mentioned Soccer Team?
The most mentioned soccer team is Orlando Pirates from Johannesburg.
