Niger East Senatorial Bye-election: Police Bar APC From Holding Rally
The police in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday barred the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from holding a rally at the Minna Polo ground.
The suspect, identified as Olu John Bello, is said to be specialised in defrauding innocent applicants, promising them recruitment into the NGO security outfit.
The party had booked the venue for a rally in support of its candidate in Saturday’s bye-election in the Niger East Senatorial election, David Umaru.
The bye-election is being held by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following the death in June of the senator representing the District, Awaisu Kuta. More details on Premium Times
Meanwhile Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will use customized ballot papers for the conduct for Saturday's Niger East Senatorial seat by-election to prevent rigging.
National Commissioner for the electoral body, Dr. Chris Iyimogu who disclosed this to newsmen shortly after the stakeholders meeting organized by the commission in Minna said, each of the nine local government councils that made up the senatorial district will have a different colored ballot paper, for easy detection of rigging.
He said the introduction of customized ballot papers in the by-election was for the purpose of checking rigging.
The National Commissioner, who is in charge of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Kaduna and Niger states further said that the non sensitive materials had since arrived the state while the sensitive materials were expected to be mobilized today.
According to him, the commission is committed to conduct the election as scheduled, hence all election materials, both sensitive and non sensitive left Central Bank Minna yesterday to the headquarters of the nine councils in order to effect early distribution of all electoral materials to polling units in good time tomorrow.
