Sim Bhullar Becomes First NBA Player of Indian Descent

The Sacramento Kings have signed the NBA's first player of Indian descent: Sim Bhullar, a massive center standing 7-feet, 5-inches tall, and weighing in at around 360 pounds.

Toronto native Bhullar, 21, played college basketball at New Mexico State University. He was the tallest player in the NCAA this season, but went undrafted in June.

The Kings signed Bhullar on Thursday, although contract details were not released. CBS Sports reported that Bhullar was likely signed to a non-guaranteed rookie-level contract.

Bhullar is the tallest player in the NBA, beating the current no. 1, Oklahoma City Thunder's Hasheem Thabeet who is 7-foot-3.

"I've long believed that India is the next great frontier for the NBA, and adding a talented player like Sim only underscores the exponential growth basketball has experienced in that nation," Vivek Ranadive, owner of the Kings and the league's first Indian-born majority owner.

Bhullar was part of the Kings' NBA summer league team, which won the tournament last month in Las Vegas.

There appears to be no guarantee that Bhullar will see time in an NBA game. It is common for undrafted rookies to sign contracts with few guarantees. In that case, Bhullar could be cut, and fail to make the final roster.

Bhullar's size combined with his light touch make him an intriguing prospect. The NBA has had no shortage of players whose height has been their primary asset, including 7-foot-6 Shawn Bradley and 7-foot-7 Manute Bol.
