N12b Road Projects Fail in Niger State
Niger State government has admitted that the N12 billion 10-kilometre road projects in each of the 25 local council areas of state awarded in 2009 have failed.
The government in 2009 awarded contracts for the construction of 10-kilometre roads in each of the 25 local councils of the state at the initial total cost of N8.5 billion but was later reviewed upward to N12 billion.
The government has so far disbursed the sum of N5 billion as mobilisation fees to all the contractors handling the projects across the 25 councils of the state.
Since 2009, only two out of the 25 local councils have so far completed their projects while work on the remaining councils stood at 15 and quality of work below specification.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Kantigi, who stated this at weekend after inspection tour of all the road projects in the 25 councils, however, noted that the failure is not one person’s failure but a collective one. He, therefore, vowed that those responsible for the failure of the contracts would be dealt with.
“We will first of all look at why the contractors failed, because from what we have seen, it is not monetary factor. There are so many factors that have contributed to the failure.
“Wherever the contractors are, we will get them. We have summoned them to tell us why they decided to abandon the projects. If they fail to come, we will follow them. Alhaji Mohammed said.
He also said "We are committed to completing the road projects in all the councils before the end of this administration.
So this time, any contractor that fails to deliver will not only be arrested and prosecuted but also blacklisted.
The commissioner, however, promised that despite the attitude of the contractors, which he described as sad, all the 10-kilometre road projects in all the 25 local council of the state would be completed before the end of the administration.
